This post, originally published in 2019, is my summary of Hysteria history and why I think we are now poised to understand functional disorders more properly for the first time. It is the result of about a year spent combing through sources ranging from the Handbook on Clinical Neurology to scholarly work on ancient Greek gynecology (seriously) and early 20th century “war neuroses.” I would like to take a moment to thank the librarians and archivists who assisted with finding sources, or alternately, didn’t notice that I wasn’t really supposed to be there.
